Baked, broiled, BBQ’ed, or fried, it’s all eye rollin’ good.Īnthony Warren caught this slot sized Cod on…what else?…a tuna swim bait. Fresh Ling cod is about the best tasting fish that swims. Jeff Rhinehart landed this nice Ling…”yup, that’ll eat”. The water, the weather, and the fishing has been Smokin’! Tyler Rhinehart shows off a keeper Ling Cod while headed back to the dock. Scott Leeming’s got a live one, headed for the fish box. Jason Schmidt does the lift and grin with a 58lb Halibut.īob Wilson takes a selfie with a flattie on the dance floor. Report submitted by Mark Coleman, All River and Saltwater Charters 42. For lingcod you can rig a slightly heavier conventional rod and mooch herring in many of the same areas as you would for rockfish. If you’re in the business of trying this fishery in your own I’d suggest using medium weight spinning setups with a tandem dropper loop and shrimp fly rig. Please keep in mind these inshore Halibut are caught randomly and we don’t specifically target them on our bottom fishing trips. The inshore Halibut season is still open at the moment but that quota is dwindling fast but we’ll continue to run trips for Lingcod and Rockfish all the way through July. Team ARSC captains Ian Winder and Jarrid Horn have had an amazing week fishing for ocean Lingcod and Rockfish and running into some nice bonus Halibut too! Marine Area 2 (Westport) is our primary bottom fishing point each spring for all of these reasons. The cover image of this week’s fishing reports was also contributed by Cyndi Lanier. Also, always fish a rattle plug. My favorite colors in Silver Horde plugs are dark green in various shades in the winter. My best plugs are the Silver Horde 4 & 5 inch plugs with a cupped face. On the opposite side, drop your plug 10’ higher and back 35 feet. If fishing two rods, drop your flasher and lure back 20 to 25 feet behind your release. Ten feet above that drop your plug back 25’ to 35 feet from your release. Run your line release with the plug 10’ above your “False Flasher”. That is simply attaching a flasher directly to your downrigger ball without an attached lure! Drop your “False Flasher” back to 6’ to 10’ behind your downrigger ball. If fishing by myself (thus one rod out) you can add attraction by using what is often referred to as “The Ace in the Hole” or “False Flasher” method. On the opposite side of the boat I will drop a plug. But plugs, except in a few situations are not designed to be fished behind flashers. Nothing attracts more salmon than a flasher and the sound (vibrations) it creates.

The first thing to go in the water on my boat is a line with a flasher, trailing a Silver Horde spoon, a Gold Star Squid or a Pro Troll E-Rotary Bait Holder, with either a brined herring or herring filet. So how do we fish plugs most effectively? Last, but certainly not least, you catch fewer salmon, but larger salmon and fewer shakers. So, you don’t have the drag of a flasher when a salmon is hooked, thus a more enjoyable fight.Ĥ. Plugs are best fished on a line, by themselves, not behind a flasher.

In the summer fishery, in an area with larger herring, once again a plug matches the size of the available bait in the water.ģ. Plugs “match the hatch”! In the winter, salmon feed heavily on the squid that enters Puget Sound to spawn.

They now have the same colors, UV and Glow finishes that spoons do.Ģ. Some of the advantages of plugs are as follows:ġ. While plugs are still popular with skilled anglers, with the new colors, finishes and actions of spoons, many anglers now overlook the advantages of plugs. During the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s if you planned on winning a salmon derby, you probably were fishing a plug. The art of fishing salmon plugs has been a favorite among both commercial and sports anglers for years.
